"The Map Is Not The Territory," 2002-2006

"We say the map is different from the territory.
But what is the territory?
Operationally, somebody went out with a retina or a measuring stick
and made representations which were then put on paper.
What is on the paper map is a representation of what was in
the retinal representation of the man who made the map;
and as you push the question back,
what you find is an infinite regress, an infinite series of maps.
The territory never gets in at all. […]
Always, the process of representation will filter it out so that
the mental world is only maps of maps, ad infinitum."

Creative Stimulus "The free flow of code is an increasingly important social and artistic force." - Spot Draves, PhD. When computers "sleep", a screen saver comes on... Electric Sheep is a free and open source distributed screen-saver that harnesses idle computers with the purpose of evolving and morphing fractal animations known as "sheep". They are modeled in a 26- to 65-dimensional space and executed by the collective power of connected Unix machines.

"If rock-paper-scissor is too simple for you, then you can try David Lovelace’s "Rock, Paper, Scissors-15" with 1.3 trillion permutation and 105 possible outcomes..." (from neatoram.com). Kaliya Hamlin (aka Identity Woman) even blogged the link we sent her... to check out the various permutations Click 'Read More!'

Emerging Systems Nikola Tesla, the father of today's AC electrical system and other key inventions, often failed to bring his visionary ideas to real-world fruition. By W. Bernard Carlson. When members of the Chicago Commercial Club arrived to hear a lecture by the famed electrical inventor Nikola Tesla on May 13, 1899, they were startled by the sight of an artificial lake sitting in the middle of the auditorium. Everyone knew that Tesla--the man who had devised the alternating-current (AC) system that brought electricity into people's homes and businesses--was a master showman.

Emerging Systems [UPDATED MAY 5, 02007] June 8 - Paul Hawken, "The New Great Transformation"

From Stewart Brand: "The environmental movement has moved on. It has become so deep and wide that it adds up to something new entirely, still unnamed. Whatever it is, it is now the largest movement in the world and the least ideological. Driven by science and patience, it is civilization-scale therapy." Paul Hawken, "ur-environmentalist" [biography] will deliver a 'landmark address' on "The Long Green." "The Long Now Foundation was established...

Emerging Systems In 'Fractal Expressionism' associate professor, Richard Taylor (Materials Science Institute at the University of Oregon) combines science and art stating that American painter Jackson Pollack's paintings were fractal. But it doesn't stop there... a relationship between the our visual field's complexity and our levels of stress can be reduced, if we take into account our environment and work surroundings... At their basic level, fractals are repeating patterns that reveal greater complexity the more they are enlarged. Some are geometric and easy to spot, like a snowflake or the popular example known as the Sierpinski Triangle, a triangle made of so many smaller triangles that the closer you look the more triangles you find...

Open Intellect This just in... from Creative Commons chairman Lawrence Lessig. He released his new book, Free Culture today, both online, a licensed downloadable version and in stores. The book covers the current state of copyright law and what it means to our culture and society.
